Consulting Process
The archive-building process begins with a one-on-one consultation to learn about your collection, digital assets, and current methods of recording, storing, and organizing both physical and digital work. Before making recommendations, SAS will spend time learning about your studio, business, or collecting practice in order to best match methods with your current ways of working.
Following this research phase, SAS will develop a plan to begin the archiving process that thoughtfully considers your operating structure and resources. The proposal may include recommendations for: collecting and organizing digital assets and metadata, software and software customization, a documentation plan, a road map for standardizing procedures and establishing core metadata, standards for naming structures and vocabularies, and lastly, recommendations for storage to maintain easy access to physical objects and digital files.
The third part of the process is implementation. There are two options for the implementation of your new archive system: (1) SAS can work to establish the archive system by processing a small sample group of content in order to get you started on the path to maintaining an archive on your own, or (2) SAS can both establish a working method and build the archive, processing physical and digital content based on your priorities.
